Cornus florida
White Flowering Dogwood

This native tree was cultivated by both Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Delicate white flowers cover the plant in spring.

“Native Americans used Cornus florida to produce scarlet dye from the bark and also as a remedy for malaria. During the Civil War when quinine was unavailable, dogwood bark served as a substitute.”
